J. Scott Rupp is a longtime hunter, competitive shooter and magazine editor. A native Pennsylvanian, his hunting exploits have taken him around the world in search of everything from Dall sheep to Cape buffalo over the past four decades. Introduced to competitive smallbore shooting by his father at age 11, Rupp was a member of the West Virginia University and Eastern Kentucky University rifle teams—achieving All American status with the latter—and was a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s International Rifle team. He is a former Pennsylvania state junior indoor position rifle champion and Virginia state prone champion and in 1984 was a member of the prestigious U.S. Dewar Team at Camp Perry’s national smallbore prone championships. Rupp’s magazine editing career began more than 25 years ago when he was hired as a staff editor for American Rifleman magazine, and over the years he has been lead editor for Pennsylvania Sportsman, Petersen’s Hunting and Guns & Ammo magazines. He is currently editor in chief for RifleShooter and Handguns magazines, as well as producer/co-host for Sportsman Channel’s “Ruger Inside & Out.”
Scott Ergas grew up immersed in the outdoors as his grandfather was a hunting guide and grandmother was a docent naturalist. Simple hikes routinely evolved into flora and fauna crash courses and impromptu tracking seminars. The nuggets of wisdom he gleaned are cherished and has helped him tremendously in his outdoor pursuits over the last few decades.
An avid big game hunter and self-proclaimed mule deer aficionado—Scott also enjoys sampling his wife’s homemade sourdough bread loaves, adventuring outside with his family near their home in Montana, and watching his kids compete in jiu jitsu tournaments.
Coming from an eclectic background—Scott embraces his multi-faceted role as digital editor for Petersen’s Hunting, RifleShooter, and Handguns Magazine and feels blessed to be a part of those brands continued success.
