Outdoor Sportsman Group Presents New Outdoor Channel Original Series ‘Feral’

OSG Logo New

From the Producers of “Andrew Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen” Comes
James Beard Award Nominee Yia Vang Cooking Invasive Species as a Delicacy

DENVER (September 12, 2022) – There are thousands of invasive and feral animal species around the world – and surprisingly, many of them are delicious. From pythons, iguanas to wild pigs, common carp to lionfish, adventure-loving, culinary arts explorer Yia Vang is ready to chase, harvest, cook and eat all the crazy creatures that have overstayed their welcome when Outdoor Channel introduces its new original series Feral on November 28, 2022.

The show – Feral – highlights the wilderness adventure, thrill of the chase and exploration of less-traditional hunted species with a fun host and engaging guests that are in search of unique and wonderful food prepared by Vang, a James Beard Award nominee and master chef.

A trained chef, avid traveler, angler and hunter, Vang is always up for a culinary challenge. He has been named Best Chef in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) multiple times and has been featured on CNN’s United Shades of America, in the pages of National Geographic and graced the cover of the May 2020 issue of Bon Appetit.

Each 30-minute episode will feature Vang arriving in a new location, identifying an invasive species and coming up with a plan for catching and cooking it. Often with the help of a local expert who will guide him on his quest – and bear witness to his mistakes – Vang will do whatever it takes to create an amazing and unusual meal by the end of every episode.

Some examples of the invasive culinary delicacies Vang will prepare on the show include:

  • Common Carp: Originally introduced by U.S. Fish & Wildlife as the “Ultimate Game Fish” the Common Carp is wreaking havoc on rivers and lakes across the country and now threatens Vang’s beloved Twin Cities.
  • Feral Hogs: Once a phenomenon in the southern states, wild pigs are taking over much of rural America, destroying crops, fouling watersheds, ruining forests – and becoming the best bacon you’ll ever eat.
  • Iguana: The quintessential invasive species that nobody really eats – until now. The green iguanas cause damage to infrastructure by digging burrows that erode and collapse sidewalks, foundations, seawalls, berms and canal banks.
  • Burmese Python: These enormous snakes were bought as pets, then released into the wild when they outgrew their cages. With females laying 100 eggs at a time, their numbers have exploded throughout Florida and other parts of the south. But how do they taste?
  • Lionfish: Found in coastal Atlantic waters from Florida to Long Island, these invasive fish are resistant to predators and gobble up native fish at astonishing rates. Vang will have his hands full with these spiny interlopers.

The Outdoor Channel original series Feral will air during Monday nights “Taste of the Wild” programming block at 9 p.m. ET beginning on November 28, 2022.

About Yia Vang: One of seven siblings, Chef Yia Vang was born in a Thai refugee camp where he lived until his family resettled in central Wisconsin. A trained chef who started his career working as a dishwasher, Yia uses food to tell a story and believes that every dish has a narrative. Through sourcing what’s in season and combining local traditions with those from his family and cultural traditions, the former “Iron Chef” participant brings Hmong flavors to American palates and invites people to change how they think about food by considering the influences in each bite. His new restaurant concept Vinai, slated to open in 2023 in Northeast Minneapolis, will celebrate his parents’ legacy and tell his family’s story through food.

Award-winning Chef and Outdoorsman Andrew Zimmern Launches Outdoor Lifestyle Show – ‘Andrew Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen’ – on Outdoor Channel on September 19 at 9 p.m. ET

OSG Logo New

DENVER (September 12, 2022) – Emmy Award® winner and four-time James Beard Award-winning TV personality and chef, Andrew Zimmern will host and executive produce Andrew Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen, a new series premiering on Outdoor Channel on Monday, September 19 at 9 p.m. EDT.

In each episode of Andrew Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen, Zimmern, an avid outdoorsman, creates a meal using sustainably-sourced wild game from field and stream accompanied by seasonal sides using foraged ingredients from his garden.

“My goal for this show is to encourage cooks to stretch beyond cooking foods that typically define outdoor grilling and embrace dishes that are just as easy, but far more satisfying to make,” says Zimmern. “In the series I share a range of practical tips that will hopefully be helpful even to more seasoned cooks and enhance the experience of cooking over an open flame.”

Andrew Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen is a great example of how the field-to-plate lifestyle doesn’t have to intimidate hunters and non-hunters in the kitchen,” Outdoor Sportsman Group Vice President of Programming Mitch Petrie said. “Andrew’s presentation and ability to have fun and educate viewers makes Wild Game Kitchen a great addition to our ‘Taste of the Wild’ programming block on Monday nights.”

Zimmern, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme, writer, teacher, world traveler, and social justice advocate, is also the creator, executive producer and host of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods franchise, Andrew Zimmern’s Driven by Food and Emmy Award®-winning The Zimmern List. He has dedicated his life to exploring and promoting cultural acceptance, tolerance and understanding through food.

In 2020, Zimmern returned to television with his series What’s Eating America (MSNBC) and he premiered Family Dinner on Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network in 2021. This year you can find him judging the epic culinary battle Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend on Netflix and his latest foray on Outdoor Channel is his first on the outdoor lifestyle network.

Andrew Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen also can be seen on MyOutdoorTV (MOTV).

Outdoor Channel Documentary Celebrates the Resurgence of North American Elk with ‘Saving America’s Monarchs: The Story of North America’s Elk’

OSG Logo New

DENVER (September 7, 2022) – Once driven to near extinction by man’s folly – overhunting – the surviving population of North American Elk continues to thrive as a result of concentrated conservation efforts. Outdoor Sportsman Group’s Outdoor Channel brings this story to life on Monday, September 12 at 9 p.m. ET with Saving America’s Monarchs: The Story of North America’s Elk.

Saving America’s Monarchs is an original documentary from Petersen’s HUNTING, written and produced by Petersen’s HUNTNG publisher Kevin Steele, that shares the tale of the conservation, preservation and re-introduction of the North American Elk, from the Ohio River Valley to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The documentary follows a traditional, tented elk hunt deep within the Rocky Mountains at the height of the rut.

Interviews with staff from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation corroborate the tales of conservation and reintroduction. The documentary also explores the first efforts by American notables President Theodore Roosevelt; author, philosopher, teacher and conservationist Aldo Leopold and anthropologist, historian, naturalist and writer George Bird Grinnell calling attention to the decline of the elk population in the west.

“The tale of America’s elk reintroduction, from remnant bands in the Rocky Mountains to today’s thriving herds from coast-to-coast, is arguably America’s most important conservation story,” Steele said. “It’s both a compelling and amazing story that needed to be told from the perspective of hunters/conservationists that strived for more than a century to make it the success it has become.”

The documentary continues with the challenges – the highs and lows – of elk hunting, the deep traditions of the American West and how the plains animal migrated to the mountains to escape the overhunting that nearly led to its extinction.

Finally, after taking a look at how many people make their livelihoods from these “American Monarchs,” the documentary concludes with a triumphant look at the role conservation has played in the resurgence and future of the North American Elk population. Through the cooperation of biologists, hunters, conservationists, politicians, local and non-residents who all share a passion and common purpose, the North American Elk, as well as the lands they roam, are maintained and bountiful.
