‘North American Whitetail’ Spring Issue Focuses on Postseason Topics

OSG Logo New

DENVER (March 30, 2021) – As the pandemic wears on, millions of whitetail hunters and landowners find themselves looking to the outdoors as a refuge from the headlines. With virtually all deer seasons now over; shed hunting, post-season scouting and managing habitat take center stage. With this in mind, the staff at North American Whitetail magazine has devoted its Spring 2021 issue to those topics, as well as new details on some of the greatest bucks taken by hunters last fall.

In a special feature, Dr. James C. Kroll — the whitetail researcher known widely as "Dr. Deer" — gives step-by-step instructions on developing a food plot where none has previously existed. This is especially helpful information for the many hunters and landowners who lack obvious locations for growing forage.

"It's not that complicated," Dr. Kroll notes. "Every piece of land contains opportunities to develop small food plots, even if the overall area is heavily wooded. Rights of ways, internal roadsides and small forest openings all can be used to grow better deer forage. Proper use of herbicides often can substitute for mechanical equipment. Plants such as clover and chicory can do reasonably well by top-seeding with minimal site preparation."

In addition to Dr. Kroll's feature, there is also a rundown of a number of new products designed to make habitat development simpler, especially on the smaller properties many wildlife enthusiasts now manage. The issue's "Gear Wise" department also looks at the best ways to store hunting and scouting gear during the off-season. And a detailed feature in the issue focuses on how to use postseason scouting and shed hunting to zero in on prime buck hideouts.

To illustrate just how well serious scouting can pay off, there are features on three enormous bucks. In fact, one of them is the world's largest ever taken by a female hunter. Paslie Werth, a 14-year-old from southwestern Kansas, dumped a massive 42-pointer on a youth hunt last September. A similar amount of time was invested by Joe Pettis, and his massive three-antlered "unicorn" buck from Wisconsin also is featured in the issue.

The cover story, chronicling the multi-year quest for a Boone & Crockett giant on public land in Pennsylvania, is perhaps the most fascinating of all. Cory Gulvas invested untold miles of legwork to finally get his crack at the ridgetop phantom. And when his chance came, he made good on it — using a simple recurve bow. From start to finish, this was one of the most epic whitetail bowhunts of all time, and readers will get to relive it in Cory's own words.

This issue of North American Whitetail is now available on newsstands everywhere. For more, visit: https://www.northamericanwhitetail.com

OSG Logo New

DENVER (March 29, 2021) – Outdoor Sportsman Group, in conjunction with the National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF), recently concluded its first annual SHOT Show® New Product Premiere and has donated $102,271 to the foundation’s Project ChildSafe® initiative.

Project ChildSafe is a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation actively promoting firearms safety and education in all 50 states and U.S. territories. The SHOT Show New Product Premiere was a multimedia, first-of-its-kind review on the latest new products and technology in the hunting/shooting space and was showcased for the first time on network television.  Consumers were able to tune into Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel each night for new product reviews traditionally limited to searching industry websites and social media outlets for product reviews.

“Project ChildSafe is a safety and education initiative that all gun owners and citizens should embrace,” Outdoor Sportsman Group Publishing Chief Operating Officer Michael Carney said. “Project ChildSafe has proven to deliver meaningful scale and impact, and Outdoor Sportsman Group is proud to be able to present the NSSF with a check for $102,271 as a demonstration of our commitment to help promote and fund this critical program NSSF has pioneered and been so successful with.”

“NSSF and the firearm industry are extremely grateful for this extraordinary donation by Outdoor Sportsman Group,” NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi said. “This support will help NSSF further expand the important work of Project ChildSafe to help reduce firearm accidents, thefts and misuse.”

The NSSF’s Project ChildSafe promotes the following, and more, key practices for safe firearms use and storage:

  • Keep all firearms locked in a safe place, away from children and other unauthorized persons, when not in use.
  • Store ammunition under lock and key, separately from firearms.
  • Read and understand the owner’s manual that came with your firearm.

‘North American Whitetail’ Embraces the Future

OSG Logo New

DENVER (March 26, 2021) – In a time of rapid transition within the outdoors industry, North American Whitetail sees new opportunities to expand its iconic brand and is taking bold steps to capitalize on them.

As part of this shift, long-time Editor in Chief Gordon Whittington has moved into the role of Editor Emeritus, making way for Haynes Shelton to lead the brand's day-to-day content generation as Editor.

"When I hired Haynes as Associate Editor in 2015, it was largely with this eventual transition in mind," Whittington says. "I'd already been at North American Whitetail for 31 years at that point, and I was looking for the ideal protege to take the reins. Haynes has proved to be just that. He has a deep passion for whitetail hunting and management, and he's dedicated himself to producing the best possible content on those topics. There's no doubt in my mind that he, Publisher Laden Force, Art Director Robert Wyszkowski and the rest of the team will continue to drive the brand forward."

“For near four decades North American Whitetail has been a pillar in the marketplace, due in large part to the great leadership of Gordon Whittington," Force said. "We are fortunate to retain him in the Editor Emeritus capacity as he moves into the next stage of his life, but even more fortunate to have Haynes stepping in as his successor.”

"As the dynamic of white-tailed deer hunting and land management content consumption has evolved, we need an editorial director who can carry on our legacy by understanding the growing educational demands and is able to build on the established foundation to create the next generation of NAW," the publisher adds. "Haynes knows the changing dynamics of the industry as well as anybody. We are looking forward to the places he will take this brand.”

Since its founding as a popular magazine in 1982, NAW has been widely recognized as the leading voice in the field of hunting and managing trophy whitetails. In the 21st Century that voice has only grown stronger, thanks to the seamless addition of television, web and social media platforms to reach a wider audience of enthusiasts. Now the talented team stands ready to reinforce the brand's stature as the “go-to” source of information and entertainment for whitetail enthusiasts all over the continent.
