DENVER (March 1, 2021) – Sustainable seafood and the local seafood culture in San Diego, as guided by unique characters, is featured in a new Outdoor Channel series, The Fishmonger, which debuts on Monday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Hosted by Tommy Gomes (aka Tommy the Fishmonger), the show examines the challenges faced by San Diego, Calf. commercial fishermen and their relationships with local chefs, the community and the world market. Gomes is determined to put San Diego back on the map as a major fishing port.

A native of San Diego, whose Portuguese family settled in the city in 1892, Gomes hails from a long line of professional tuna fishermen. After retiring from commercial fishing, he landed a job in 2003 as a fish cutter. He evolved into the role of fishmonger, becoming the seafood supplier’s public face and helping grow the brand beyond its wholesale origins.

In 2011, Gomes’ charisma and seafood expertise landed him on San Diego Magazine’s list of “50 People to Watch.” By 2012 he had opened Catalina Offshore Product’s Seafood Education and Nutrition Center – a fish market that attracts customers from around the world, including top chefs and media. He also had founded “Collaboration Kitchen,” a nonprofit dinner series focused on seafood education. An outspoken champion of local and sustainable seafood, he promotes responsible fishing practices and zero-waste consumption. His pioneering approach to opah, specifically, led to an emerging market for several edible parts of the fish that historically have been overlooked. His work was a significant component in Catalina Offshore receiving a substantial grant in 2019 in collaboration with NOAA Fisheries which was aimed at increasing the value of San Diego’s local fisheries.

In his spare time, Gomes can be found on the local restaurant scene, watching hockey, or taking his boat, motorcycle or ’55 Ford pickup for a ride.

Sportsman Channel to Host ‘McKenzie Archery Shooters Association 3D Live Tournament’

DENVER (February 22, 2021) Sportsman Channel, a network of Outdoor Sportsman Group – the world’s largest aggregator, creator and distributor of outdoor lifestyle content, has signed on as the official multimedia distributor of the McKenzie Archery Shooters Association (ASA) 3D Live Tournament. The events will be broadcast via linear, digital and social channels (Sportsman Channel, MOTV and Sportsman Channel Facebook page) beginning on February 27 at 5 p.m. ET with the Hoyt Pro/Am Tournament, and then continue to distribute monthly tournaments through the summer, with the final tournament on August 28.

The ASA, established in 1994, was formed to call attention to the sport of archery by providing a series of tournaments for highly-skilled participants. The concept has evolved to the point where Sportsman Channel has agreed to televise tournaments in a six-month schedule in 2021. Each McKenzie ASA tournament can draw up to 2,000 amateur and professional archers from all over the world.

“The sport of archery goes well beyond what we see every four years – if we’re lucky – during the Olympic Games,” Outdoor Sportsman Group President and CEO Jim Liberatore said. “The ASA has established itself as a bonafide, first-class organization that is determined to bring the sport of archery to the masses.”

The ASA “Pro Pressure Point Shootdowns” are the highlight of each national McKenzie ASA tournament. After two days of competition in the field, the top five archers in each of the four professional divisions square off on a special, five-target field set up with stadium seating and CAM’s broadcast cameras.

Each archer shoots an arrow at one of the five targets to add to their two-day cumulative score from the weekend. If needed, a sixth arrow also is shot to determine the final podium positions. This phase of the competition features the added pressure of archers having to perform in front of hundreds of spectators on the field with broadcast cameras following their every move.
